Tip of the Week

Pool Safety for Children
Establishing and following "Pool Rules" can help ensure your family and friends have a safe and fun time swimming this summer.  Teach your children to swim as early as possible and always watch your children when they are in or near a pool or spa.  Each year, nationwide, we experience too many incidents of children drowning in swimming pools, usually a pool owned by their family, friends or a relative.  At the time of most incidents, the children were being supervised by one or both parents.  Toddlers, in particular, often do the unexpected.  In addition to drowning incidents, thousands of children are treated in hospital emergency rooms for submersion injuries.  Do not consider young children to be "drown proof" because they have had swimming lessons; children must always be watched closely while swimming.  Here are a few "Pool Rules" you can adopt to keep your family and friends safe:

*        Always have adult supervision.
*        Never lose sight of toddlers near a pool or spa.
*        Keep a portable telephone near the pool with emergency numbers posted.
*        Learn CPR; at least one adult family member should know CPR.
*        Do not allow running on the edge of the pool.
*        Keep large floating toys out of the pool - they block the view.
*        Keep deck areas free of clutter.
*        Never allow young children to dive into a pool.
*        Install pool lights for night vision.
·        Have a clear view of the pool from inside your home.
*        Remove automatic vacuums from the pool before swimming.
*        Remove toys from in and around the pool; toys can attract young children.
*        Keep pool chemicals locked away.
*        Never allow extension cords near a pool.
*        Keep rescue equipment by the pool.
*        Install a pool safety fence around your pool and ensure pool gates are kept closed.

Enforce your "Pool Rules" with family and friends for a safe and fun summer in the pool!

Tip of the Week

Beat the Heat - Check the Back Seat
Never leave your child alone in a vehicle - It's the Law!  California Law Requires: That a parent, legal guardian, or other person responsible for a child who is 6 years of age or younger, may not leave that child inside a motor vehicle without the supervision of someone 12 years of age or older.
Between May of 1998 to May of 2012, 527 children died of hyperthermia from being left alone in a motor vehicle in the United States.  This is a completely preventable statistic.  On a mild day of 80 degrees, the inside of a vehicle can heat quickly.  In only 10 minutes raising the inside temperature of the vehicle to 99 degrees, in 20 minutes to 109 degrees, in 30 minutes to 114 degrees, and 60 minutes to 123 degrees.  It is never safe to leave a child alone in a parked car because the sun's radiation warms objects inside of the car, such as the dashboard, steering wheel, child seat, etc., then these heated objects quickly heat the trapped air inside of the car, similarly to that of a convection oven.

What can you do?  Never leave a child alone in a vehicle.  Once you reach your destination; make sure that all occupants leave the vehicle when unloading; take all children, including sleeping infants, with you; lock your vehicle doors and trunks; and keep the keys out of the reach of children.  This information is provided by the County of Los Angeles Public Health Department.  For more information on child safety, click on County of Los Angeles Public Health and visit their website.

Tip of the Week

Vacation Time Home Security
It's summertime, and before you decide to pack up the family and go on vacation, take a few precautions to keep your home safe while you are away.  Be cautious of who you tell about your vacation.  It's okay to let a trusted neighbor know when and where you are going, just don't broadcast it to your whole neighborhood.  And don't post the fact that you are going on vacation on social network sites for anyone to see; a friend of a friend of your friend just could be a burglar.

Also, take a few steps to make potential burglars believe someone is actually home.  Hook up a timer to lights, televisions and radios, so they go on and off while you are away.  Adjust the time setting to your normal routine.  Make sure that everything is locked up and secure before you head out; double check sheds, windows, garage doors, and any other opportunistic locations.  Have the post office hold your mail or have a trusted neighbor collect your mail for you, as well as your newspaper.  Don't allow newspapers to stack up in your driveway; an obvious clue to thieves that no one is home.

Another precaution you can take is to turn off the ringer to your phone.  An unanswered phone might tip off a prowler that you are away.  Don't leave a message on your answering machine announcing your vacation to callers.  If you have a home security system, call your company and let them know you will be on vacation and notify local law enforcement, as well, so they can keep an extra eye on your home while you are away.
