Highlighted Activity for January 8-11, 2015

Animal Problem
January 9 at 3:08 p.m., police received information reporting possible animal cruelty occurring at a residence in the 400 block of Monrovista. An officer responded to the location and found there were seven dogs at the residence. Pasadena Humane Society was contacted and also responded to the location. The dog owner voluntarily released custody of five of the dogs to Pasadena Humane and two remained at the location.
The two remaining dogs were unlicensed and the owner was given a time period in which to get the dogs licensed. There was no evidence of physical abuse to the animals; however, there was an element of general neglect, based on the poor condition of the home, where the animals were kept. The Community Policing Office will follow up on this case regarding code enforcement violations.
Public Intoxication – Suspect Arrested
January 9 at 6:15 p.m., an intoxicated female subject was found at the skate park in the 800 block of East Olive. The subject was arrested and held for sobering.
Urinating in Public / Public Intoxication – Suspect Arrested 
January 10 at 7:50 p.m., officers observed a male subject urinating against a wall in the 1800 block of South Myrtle. The subject was found to be too intoxicated to care for himself and was arrested. He was held for sobering.
Disturbance / Public Intoxication – Suspect Arrested
January 10 at 10:00 p.m., police responded to the theater in the 400 block of South Myrtle regarding a male subject causing a disturbance inside the theatre. Officers determined the subject was intoxicated and could not care for himself. He was arrested and held for sobering.
Vehicle Burglary
January 11 at 5:03 p.m., a vehicle burglary was reported in the 1800 block of South Fifth Avenue. The victim parked and locked the vehicle in its assigned parking space. Unknown suspect(s) smashed one of the vehicle windows and took a Nikon camera that was left inside. The investigation is continuing.
Petty Theft – Suspects Arrested
January 12 at 4:22 a.m., police received several calls reporting a disturbance at a residence in the 00 block of Hidden Valley. When officers arrived, the victim reported that two females had come onto his property and were stealing yard art, pots and plants from his front yard. The victim heard the suspects and confronted them.
When confronted, the females began yelling that they were being raped and residents in the area phoned police to report someone was being raped. The females were able to get into their vehicle and they fled. Officers arrived and locked down the street. They located the suspects still nearby on Hidden Valley. The stolen property was recovered. The victim positively identified the suspects and made a citizen's arrest. The suspects were arrested and their vehicle was stored.

Highlighted Activity for the Weekdays of August 4-6, 2014

Indecent Exposure
On August 4 at 2:47 a.m., an officer was dispatched to a business in the 800 block of East Huntington regarding a male suspect exposing himself outside the business. A female employee walked out of the business and witnessed the incident. The suspect fled the area prior to police arrival. An area check was made, but the suspect was not located.
Through investigation, the identity of the suspect was learned and he was positively identified by the victim. August 6 at 7:08 p.m., the suspect was located at his residence and arrested. The suspect has previously been convicted for the same charge, making this offense a felony. The suspect is a sex registrant out of Monrovia.
Warrant Arrest
On August 6 at 2:44 a.m., officers responded to Walker Avenue and Duarte Road to assist Irwindale Police Department on a traffic stop. Irwindale officers had been in pursuit of the vehicle and had stopped it in this area. Irwindale conducted a DUI investigation on the driver. The passenger had a warrant issued out of Monrovia Police Department and was intoxicated.  The subject was arrested by Monrovia officers for the
warrant and being drunk in public.
Warrant Arrest
On August 6 at 3:25 a.m., officers on patrol observed a male subject in the 500 block of West Huntington Drive. They recognized the subject from prior contacts and knew he had outstanding warrants. The officers confirmed the warrants and arrested the suspect.

Tip of the Week

Summer Vacation Hotel Safety Tips
 Don’t answer the door in a hotel or motel room without verifying who it is. If a person claims to
be an employee, call the front desk and ask if someone from their staff is supposed to have
access to your room and for what purpose.
 When returning to your hotel or motel late in the evening, use the main entrance of the hotel. Be observant and look around before entering parking lots.  Close the door securely whenever you are in your room and use all of the locking devices provided.
 Don’t needlessly display guest room keys in public or carelessly leave them on restaurant tables, at the swimming pool, or other places where they can be easily stolen.
 Do not draw attention to yourself by displaying large amounts of cash or expensive jewelry.
 Don’t invite strangers to your room.
 Place all valuables in the hotel or motel’s safe deposit box.
 Do not leave valuables in your vehicle.
 Check to see that any sliding glass doors or windows and any connecting room doors are locked.
 If you see any suspicious activity, please report your observations to the management or call 911.

Highlighted Activity for December 12-15, 2013

Vehicle Burglary

December 12 at 1:33 p.m., a vehicle burglary was reported at a business parking lot in the 700 block of East Huntington.  The suspects broke a window on the victim’s vehicle and took a laptop computer bag containing a small camera and paperwork.  The suspects are described as two male Hispanics that were seen leaving the area in a primer black Honda Prelude.  The driver is described as heavy set with a shaved head.  The second suspect was wearing a Raider's hat, t-shirt and gloves.  The investigation is continuing.

Residential Burglary / Grand Theft Auto – Suspect Arrested

December 12 at 12:05 a.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 400 block of East Walnut regarding a residential burglary.  One of the three residents had returned home and discovered the suspect's computer hooked up in the house.  Another one of the residents recognized the computer as belonging to a neighbor, who had been arrested two days prior for trespassing at the same location.  Officers went to the suspect’s residence, but he was not at the home.

At 2:40 a.m., Monrovia dispatch received a call from Ventura California Highway Patrol reporting they had a suspect in custody after a pursuit.  The suspect was driving a vehicle belonging to one of the victim’s of this burglary.  The victim was unaware the vehicle had been taken.  It appears the suspect, the victims’ neighbor, broke into the residence, used the victims’ Internet connection, took one of the resident’s car keys, identification, a pair of slippers, and drove off in the vehicle.  The suspect left behind his computer and a pair of pants.  The CHP confirmed the suspect was driving with shorts on and slippers.  The suspect was arrested and taken into custody by CHP.

Colorado Commons Vandalism – Juvenile Suspect Arrested

Over the last several months, the police department has been receiving reports of vandalism to the Colorado Commons parking structure believed to be committed by juveniles who are being left unattended at the Friday Night Street Fair.  The suspects have been spraying fire retardants all over the parking lot, in the elevators and on the stairwells. 

On Friday, December 12, police assigned an officer to extra patrol the location.  The officer arrested a juvenile suspect he observed spraying a fire extinguisher in the elevator.  The juvenile was taken into custody, charged for the vandalism, and his parents were contacted. 

 

The Monrovia Police Department would like to take this opportunity to remind parents that they will be held financially responsible for the vandalism committed by their juvenile children.  Police ask that you please supervise your child at the Friday Night Street Fair and do not leave them unattended.

Injury Traffic Collision – Vehicle vs. Bicyclist

December 14 at 11:30 a.m., an officer responded to the area of Colorado and Magnolia regarding a traffic collision involving a bicyclist. Two bicyclists were riding eastbound on Colorado and had stopped for the stop sign.  A vehicle heading northbound on Magnolia had also stopped for the stop sign.  The driver of the vehicle did not see the bicyclists and as they were crossing the intersection, the driver of the vehicle hit the rear tire of one of them, knocking the bicyclist off the bike.  The Bicyclist sustained minor injuries.

Injury Traffic Collision / Outside Assist – California Highway Patrol

December 14 at 4:51 p.m., officers responded to the 900 block of South Fifth regarding a vehicle that had come off the 210 Freeway, eastbound, and came to rest on an oak tree by a parking area.  The driver and two passengers received minor injuries.  The collision was handled by the California Highway Patrol.

Surreptitious Video Recording of a Minor

December 15 at 3:05 p.m., the mother of a two-year-old girl came into the police lobby to file a report.  She and other family members were eating at a restaurant located in the 100 block of West Foothill.  Her daughter was with her and needed to use the restroom.  The mother took her daughter to the restroom, but found it locked.  She told her daughter in a loud voice that she would have to wait so the person in the bathroom might hurry.  The door opened up and a male subject exited.  The mother then walked her daughter into the restroom, and while there, she noticed an iPhone placed in the trap of the sink, facing the toilet.  She looked at the phone's video and clearly saw the male subject who had just exited placing the phone to capture video of anyone using the restroom.  The mother took the phone to the police station.  An officer contacted the male suspect and he admitted to placing the phone to capture video of the two-year-old girl.  Criminal charges will be filed against the suspect.

Traffic Collision / Vehicle vs. Pedestrian

On December 15 at 4:38 p.m., a traffic collision involving a pedestrian was reported in the area of Wildrose and Mountain.  A vehicle was stopped heading west on Wildrose,    waiting for traffic to clear.  The driver looked north and then south, not seeing any other traffic, he started the turn without seeing the pedestrian who was crossing the street and struck the pedestrian.  The victim, a 62 year old man, received abrasions and was complaining of pain.  He was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries.   

Highlighted Activity for the Weekdays of December 2-4, 2013

 Vehicle Burglary

December 2 at 7:38 a.m., a vehicle burglary was reported in the 700 block of Bonita.  The victim parked her vehicle in front of her residence 5:30 p.m.   When she went to her vehicle the next morning, she noticed her driver's door was open.  The loss was a pair of shoes, sunglasses and CD case.  The investigation is continuing.

Vehicle Burglary

December 2 at 7:42 a.m., a vehicle was reported burglarized in the 800 block of West Olive.  The victim parked her vehicle in the rear carport area at 9:00 p.m. and returned to her vehicle in the morning at 6:00 a.m.   She discovered the front door and trunk open.  The loss was a laptop computer.  The victim believes she locked her vehicle, but was not sure.  The investigation is continuing.

Commercial Burglary

December 2 at 8:09 a.m., dispatch received a call reporting a burglary at a business in the 1800 block of California.  The business was closed and locked the day before at 3:00 p.m.  When the reporting party arrived at the business at 8:00 a.m., they noticed the lock to the back gate had been cut.  The loss was several hundred pounds of steel.  The investigation is continuing.

Stolen Vehicle

December 2 at 11:44 a.m., a vehicle was stolen from a business parking lot in the 300 block of West Huntington.  The victim parked his vehicle, a white Honda CRV in the lot and entered a store.  He returned approximately 30 minutes later and discovered his vehicle was missing.  The investigation is continuing.

Commercial Burglary – Suspects Arrested

December 2 at 12:18 p.m., a burglary was reported at a business in the 500 block of West Huntington.  Two adult males entered the store; one was wearing a backpack. Both selected merchandise and concealed it in the backpack and then exited the store without paying.  Once outside, they were detained by officers and both were arrested.

Indecent Exposure – Suspect Arrested

December 2 at 7:11 p.m., a woman inside the library in the 300 block of South Myrtle saw a male subject sitting in a chair in the adult section of the library, exposing himself.  She immediately called the police.  Officers responded and the suspect was detained, positively identified and arrested for indecent exposure. 

Stolen Vehicle Recovered – Suspect Arrested

December 3 at 11:00 a.m., the victim's son called to report that he saw his mother’s stolen vehicle, which was stolen the day before Thanksgiving, in a business parking lot in the 700 block of West Huntington.  He claimed he saw two male suspects exit the vehicle and get into a blue Honda that headed west on the 210 Freeway. 

An officer responded to the location and found the vehicle parked, but he noticed the hood of the vehicle was not hot.  The officer checked with gardeners that were working in the area, and they said they saw the vehicle parked since 8:00 a.m. when they arrived.  The officer questioned the mother and suspicion was raised that her son may have stolen the vehicle.  Officers questioned the son, who denied taking the vehicle at first, but later admitted to the theft, and said he was under the influence of drugs at the time.  He felt it was time to return the vehicle and created the story of seeing the suspects.  The son was arrested and taken into custody.

Missing Juvenile Located

December 3 at 3:41 p.m., a 16-year-old male juvenile was reported missing to police by his father.  The father dropped his son off at high school in the 800 block of West Colorado in the morning.  On his way to pick him up after school, the father received a text message from the son stating that he no longer wanted to be a burden.  The father arrived at the school, but his son was not at the designated location.  He checked the school with school staff and then went home to check there, but did not find his son.  He then went to the police department.  Officers began an investigation and conducted an area check, but the subject was not located.

Later that evening, the missing juvenile called his father and said he was ready to come home.  When the father asked him where he was, the son told him he was on the sidewalk across the street from their house.  The son was located outside by his father.

Prevent Theft of Packages

Theft of packages is an easy crime to commit and can be perpetrated by even the least professional type of criminal.  Below are some simple steps you can take to protect your package delivery:

Request a specific drop off time when you know that you will be at home to receive the package.

Ask for your parcel to be placed on a back porch or even beside the front porch or anywhere that is not visible from the street.

Arrange to pick up your parcels at a package store, such as a UPS store that is convenient for you.  

Let a trustworthy neighbor know you are expecting a package delivery on a specific day and ask them to look out for it and bring it into their home for you.

Have your package delivered to your work address during daytime hours.

Know when a package is scheduled to arrive and if it doesn't, contact the sender to track the transport status of the package.

And if you see mail theft happening in your neighborhood, be sure to call your local police at once to report exactly what you have seen.  Time can be a decisive factor in the apprehension of mail thieves.

Highlighted Activity for the Week of May 27- June 2, 2013

Weapons Offense / Possession of Marijuana – Suspects Arrested

May 27 at 7:49 a.m., an officer observed a male and female subject coming out from behind a church in the 500 block of East Duarte Road.  The church was not open for services, and the officer felt it was suspicious they were there.  He contacted them, and a consent search revealed the male subject to be in possession of marijuana and the female was in possession of a large, straight-edged knife, wrapped in a towel.  Both subjects were arrested.  The female was later found to be in possession of marijuana, also. 

Warrant / False Information to a Peace Officer – Suspect Arrested

May 27 at 4:00 p.m., an officer on patrol saw two female subjects in possession of shopping carts that had been removed from their properties.  He spoke to them and identified the women.  One provided a false name, using the name of her sister, who lives out of state.  When her true identity was revealed, it was determined she had a warrant for her arrest out of San Bernardino.  She was arrested and charged for providing false information to a peace officer and for using the personal identifying information of another to avoid being identified.  

Felony Vandalism / Indecent Exposure / Mental Evaluation

May 28 at 7:27 a.m., a subject known to officers to have mental health problems was pulling on electrical wires on the roof of a business in the 600 block of West Huntington and yelling obscenities.  He was nude, except for a shirt.  When officers arrived, he had fled the scene, but was located and detained at a mobile home complex a short distance away.  He was taken to a hospital for mental evaluation.  He did about $1500 in damage to the business.

Indecent Exposure – Suspect Arrested

May 28 at 3:29 p.m., a witness called police to report a male suspect masturbating as he stood behind three junior-high-aged girls, who were waiting at the bus stop at Huntington and California.   The girls were unaware he was doing this behind them.  Officers arrived and detained the suspect, but the girls and the reporting party had left the location.  The reporting party returned, identified the suspect and was willing to be listed as a witness for prosecution.  The suspect was found to have prior convictions for similar offenses, qualifying this incident as a felony.  He was arrested for the felony charge and held on bail.

Residential Burglary

May 30 at 10:00 a.m., a resident in the 900 block of Crescent left her house for the day and returned home at 3:00 p.m.  She didn’t notice anything out of place immediately.  After about an hour, she discovered a side window to the house was open, as well as the backdoor.  She looked to see if anything was missing and discovered her jewelry missing from her jewelry box in her bedroom.  She immediately called the police.  The investigation is continuing. 

Elder Abuse / Domestic Battery – Suspect Arrested

May 30 at 8:15 p.m., officers responded to a residence in the 300 block of Genoa regarding a report of elder abuse and domestic battery.  The 83-year-old grandmother of the suspect had a water bottle blessed by the pastor of her church and instructed her grandson, who lives with her, not to touch it.  While she was cooking, the suspect grabbed the bottle of water and began drinking it.  The grandmother attempted to take the bottle from the suspect and he slapped her in the face and threw an open can of corn at her, which did not hit her.  The suspect then stormed out of the residence, and the grandmother locked the door and called police.  While she was on the phone, the suspect grabbed a brick and threw it through the kitchen window. 

Officers arrived quickly and detained the grandson.  The grandmother stated she had been trying to get him out of the house because he was becoming more abusive.  The suspect was arrested.  The officer was able to obtain an Emergency Protective Order, and the suspect was held for bail and served in jail with the order.

Petty Theft From a Vehicle

May 31 at 8:00 a.m., officers were on patrol in the 1100 block of Carmelita when they observed a white BMW parked in a residential driveway.  The officer noticed the passenger door was not closed all the way and thought it looked suspicious.  Officers investigated and discovered the vehicle had been ransacked.  The owner was contacted and was unaware of the incident.  The vehicle had been left unlocked.  The ashtray, containing money, was stolen.  The investigation is continuing.

Mental Evaluation / Weapons Confiscated

June 1 at 9:11 a.m., officers were dispatched to a residence in the 1800 block of South Mayflower.  A man was reportedly standing on his porch, waving a handgun.  The man was wearing only underwear.  The reporting party had knowledge that the man is mentally ill.  Officers arrived and saw the man seated near the garage with a holstered handgun on a table about two feet away.  The man was disoriented and talking to himself.  An officer yelled verbal commands to the man.  He complied and was detained without incident.  No one was injured.  The man said he was off his medication and was hearing voices.  He was taken to a hospital, where he was held for a 72-hour mental evaluation.  The handgun and several other weapons were confiscated and held for safekeeping.

Petty Theft / Possession of a Controlled Substance – Suspect Arrested

June 1 at 9:34 p.m., dispatch received a call from a business in the 100 block of West Foothill reporting a theft.  A male and female had exited the store pushing shopping carts containing food, and they had not paid for the items.  A few minutes later, police received a second call reporting two subjects going to the rear of a residence, pushing shopping carts.  Officers responded and detained the suspects.  They were arrested and, during the pat down search, one of the suspects was found to be in possession of a controlled substance.

Residential Burglary

June 2 at 3:00 p.m., a homeowner in the 1400 block of South Fifth left their house to go shopping.  When they returned home at 4:00 p.m., they discovered their house had been burglarized.  The backdoor was left unlocked, which is how the suspect gained entry.  A laptop, an iPad mini and an unknown amount of U.S. currency in change was taken.  The investigation is continuing.

Vehicle Burglary

June 3 at 5:24 a.m., a resident in the 500 block of West Duarte Road reported seeing two male suspects breaking into a vehicle parked to the rear of an apartment complex.  When officers arrived, the suspects were gone.  A window had been shattered on the vehicle and the dashboard had been dismantled.  Officers located the victim and processed the vehicle for evidence.  The investigation is continuing.
