Highlighted Activity for the Weekend of November 7-10, 2013

Commercial Burglary

November 8 at 1:40 p.m., a male suspect walked into a business in the 500 block of West Huntington and went straight to the jewelry section.  He immediately began to stuff his pants with jewelry and then ran out of the store.  Store security followed the suspect and called police.  Officers arrived and saw the suspect riding a bicycle south on Mayflower.  When the suspect saw the officers, he jumped off the bike and ran through a condominium complex and out of sight.  Officers attempted to surround and contain the area, but the suspect was not located.  The investigation is continuing

Petty Theft / Warrant – Suspect Arrested

November 8 at 6:55 p.m., a petty theft was reported at a business in the 500 block of West Huntington.  Loss prevention personnel had detained an adult female outside the store after they observed her place several items inside her purse.  She paid for a couple of items, but did not pay for the more expensive items she had concealed in her purse.  Officers responded and upon further investigation, discovered the suspect also had an outstanding warrant for theft.  She was arrested and taken into custody.

Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance / Possession of Methamphetamine – Suspect Arrested

November 9 at 1:07 a.m., police dispatch received a phone call from a male subject at a hotel in the 900 block of East Huntington.  He stated that several armed men had broken into his hotel room and he was barricading himself in the bathroom.  The subject was ranting and seemed incoherent.  Officers arrived on scene and surrounded the location.  They called to the subject and told him to exit the hotel room.  He did not respond immediately and was acting strange, but he eventually exited the room.  The subject was determined to be under the influence of a controlled substance.  Officers made a protective sweep of the hotel room and no other subjects were in the room.  The officers discovered methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia in the room.  The subject was arrested.

Driving Under the Influence – Suspect Arrested

November 9 at 1:08 a.m., an officer observed a driver make several vehicle code violations and conducted a traffic stop.  When contacting the driver, the officer suspected the subject had been drinking.  After investigation, the subject was determined to be driving under the influence and was arrested.

Shots Heard

November 8 at approximately 1:29 a.m., dispatch received numerous calls reporting two loud bangs, possibly shots heard, in the area of the 200 block of North Myrtle.  No further information was given from any caller.  At the time officers were working two separate crimes and both locations reported hearing the possible shots.  An extensive area search was conducted with negative results. 

Domestic Violence – Suspect Arrested

November 10 at 1:25 a.m., a family disturbance was reported at a residence in the 500 block of South California.  Officers arrived and determined that during an argument, the male subject grabbed the female by the jacket and pushed her against the wall.  No injuries occurred.  The male subject was arrested for domestic violence.

Armed Robbery

November 10 at 6:04 p.m., a robbery was reported at the skate park in the 800 block of East Olive.  Three male Hispanic suspects, ages 16 to 20 years old, were at the skate park when one of the suspects confronted the victim with a machete and demanded the victim's laptop computer and wallet.  The suspects fled the area in a silver Honda Civic, heading southbound on Shamrock towards Huntington.  Officers responded and searched the area, but the suspects were not located.  The investigation is continuing.

Special Enforcement Team Activity

On November 8, while on patrol, Special Enforcement Team officers cited one subject for drinking alcohol at a park in the 300 block of South Myrtle.

Highlighted Activity for the Weekdays of November 4-6, 2013

Grand Theft Auto

November 4 at 6:15 a.m., a vehicle was reported stolen from the 200 block of East Colorado.  Unknown suspect(s) took the victim's white Honda Civic from the front of his home.  The victim did not know the license plate number of the vehicle because he had just bought the car the day before.  The investigation is continuing.

False Report to an Officer/ Misuse of 9-1-1 – Suspect Arrested

November 4 at 8:37 a.m., Irwindale Police Department received a 9-1-1 call from a cell phone.  It was an open line, and the dispatcher could hear a female subject talking to a male subject, saying he had hurt her wrist, and then the phone went dead.  The Irwindale dispatcher called back and the female answered, whispering into the phone that the male subject was now in the shower and he had in gun in the bathroom with him.  The female stated he had hit her in the ribcage and was requesting paramedics.  The subjects were at an address in the 500 block of East Colorado in Monrovia.  Irwindale advised Monrovia Police Department and officers responded and set up containment of the location.  

Monrovia dispatch called the residence and the male subject answered the phone.  He was asked to step outside.  The subject complied and calmly walked outside with his hands in the air; he was detained without incident.  After a thorough investigation, it was determined that the female had made a false report to police.  She was arrested for making a false report to an officer and a false 9-1-1 call.

Driving Under the Influence / Failure to Yield – Suspect Arrested

November 5 at 7:25 p.m., an officer was on patrol near Chestnut and Fifth when he saw a vehicle driving south on Fifth with a flat tire.  The vehicle continued to Huntington and Fifth without pulling over.  The officer activated his lights and siren to get the driver to pull over, but the vehicle failed to yield and continued east on Huntington to Monterey, where the driver eventually pulled into a business parking lot.  The officer contacted the driver and determined the driver was intoxicated.  He was arrested for driving under the influence and failing to yield to an emergency vehicle.

Detective Bureau Case Follow-Up

Burglary Suspect Arrested and Charged

In June, officers took a report of a burglary from an apartment in the 1400 block of Alta Vista.  Several female subjects were mentioned as possible suspects, but the leads on the case needed to be followed up.  In October, Officers took a report of a burglary from a business in the 500 block of Huntington and the suspect was apprehended. The handling officer found the suspect he had in custody was listed as a possible suspect in the burglary from the apartment.  

A burglary detective was then assigned to assist in the investigation and was able to produce more evidence and facts confirming the suspect in custody had, in fact, committed the burglary in June.  Due to the good work of both patrol personnel and the detective, two felony counts of burglary were charged against the suspect.

Murder Suspect Sentenced to 110 Years

In October of 2004, a male subject was murdered in an alley off the 200 block of West Olive, when the suspect shot the victim with a .22 revolver in the back of the head.  No witnesses initially came forward and the crime appeared to be gang related, so few potential witnesses were willing to admit any knowledge of the incident.  The case was not solved initially and was later assigned to a special task force assigned to the gang related crimes occurring in the city at the time.  A Monrovia Police Department detective was assigned to the task force and has worked relentlessly on the case for the past four years.  

After the tireless work of many from the Monrovia Police Department, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office, the suspect, a documented gang member, was given a 110 year sentence on October 30, 2013. The success of the prosecution relied on hard work and new developments in the processing of DNA-based evidence.

Downtown Monrovia Halloween Event

On October 31, over one thousand people dressed in costume attended Monrovia’s Halloween event on Myrtle Avenue.  During the event, one female adult suffered a seizure and was cared for by police explorers until officers and paramedics arrived.  The explorers also assisted in locating a missing purse at the event.  The street was closed from 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. for the Halloween event.

Outside Assist / Assault with a Deadly Weapon – Suspect Arrested

October 31 at 6:02 p.m., dispatch received a call reporting a stabbing on a bus at Longden and Peck, involving two victims.  The suspect was last seen running north on Peck toward a nearby church.  Monrovia Special Enforcement Team officers responded and conducted a search, locating the suspect in the church.  He was detained and the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department was notified after it was determined the incident occurred in the county area of Arcadia. 

Grand Theft From a Vehicle

October 31 at 10:00 p.m., an officer responded to the 700 block of West Foothill regarding a theft from a vehicle.  The victim reported that someone had entered her vehicle and had stolen her laptop, iPad, and backpack.  The vehicle was parked on the street and had no signs of forced entry.  The investigation is continuing.

Driving Under the Influence – Suspect Arrested

November 1 at 2:25 a.m., an officer stopped a vehicle at Myrtle and Huntington for a vehicle code violation.  After investigation, the driver was determined to be driving under the influence and was arrested.

Stolen Vehicle – Suspect Arrested

November 1 at 11:00 a.m., an officer was investigating a vehicle theft that had occurred the day before at a business in the 100 block of West Chestnut.  The business owner suspected an employee, as a vehicle had gone missing before.  The vehicle was recovered by the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department around the corner from the employee's residence.  The officer spoke to the employee, who admitted taking the vehicle.  He said the vehicle broke down on him and he was unable to return it before the business opened.  The employee was arrested for grand theft auto and held for bail.

November 2 at 2:32 a.m., an officer stopped a vehicle on Huntington and Myrtle for a vehicle code violation and discovered the subject had been drinking.  The driver was determined to be driving under the influence and was arrested.

Stolen Vehicle

November 3 at 2:27 p.m., a vehicle was reported stolen from the 1000 block of Royal Oaks.  The victim last saw his car in his parking space on November 1.  When he returned to his vehicle on November 3, it was missing.  The victim had left the keys in the car.  The investigation is continuing.

Stolen vehicle

November 3 at 4:35 p.m., an officer responded to the parking lot of a business in the 1600 block of South Mountain regarding a stolen truck.  The victim had parked his work truck, a blue, 1999 Nissan containing gardening equipment, in the parking lot.  When he returned to the area where he parked the truck, he found broken glass on the ground and the truck missing.  The investigation is continuing.

Warrant – Suspect Arrested

November 3 at 7:31 p.m., an officer on patrol in the 100 block of West Foothill observed a speeding motorist.  The motorist was stopped and found to be an unlicensed driver.  A computer check revealed the motorist had an outstanding warrant for his arrest issued by the Glendale Police Department and he was also found to be in possession of marijuana.  The subject received a citation for the unlicensed driver and possession of marijuana charges, and the Glendale Police Department responded and took custody of the subject for the warrant.

Special Enforcement Team Weekly Activity

On November 2, Special Enforcement Team officers conducted an Alcoholic Beverage Control Party Patrol from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.  One male adult was cited for an open container of an alcoholic beverage at a park in the 300 block of South Myrtle.

Highlighted Activity for the Week of October 28-30, 2013

Possession of a Controlled Substance / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia – Suspect Arrested

October 29 at 3:04 p.m., officers responded to a park in the 400 block of South California on the report of several male subjects in the park involved in drug activity.  After investigation, officers arrested one male suspect who was found to be in possession of a glass pipe and methamphetamine.  

Hot Prowl Residential Burglary

October 30 at 11:45 p.m., officers were dispatched to a residence in the 500 block of North Alta Vista regarding a hot prowl burglary that just occurred.  The owners of the residence were away from the location at the time of the burglary and a housekeeper was home, asleep inside one of the bedrooms.  She was awakened by two male Black suspects that came into the room.  When the suspects saw her, they ran out the backdoor of the residence.  The housekeeper called the homeowners, and there was an approximate twenty minute delay until the owners arrived home and called the police.  Officers responded and the area was searched, but no suspects were located.  A rock had been thrown through the backdoor window to gain entry to the home.  The investigation is continuing.

Driving Under the Influence / Traffic Collision – Suspect Arrested

October 24 at 6:35 p.m., a traffic collision was reported at Foothill and Shamrock.  The driver was heading east on Foothill and suddenly veered right, causing his vehicle to sideswipe two parked vehicles.  The driver was determined to be intoxicated and was arrested for driving under the influence.

Commercial Burglary / Conspiracy – Suspects Arrested

October 24 at 6:46 p.m., officers responded to a business in the 1600 block of South Mountain regarding two male suspects attempting to steal merchandise.  Officers arrived and detained the two suspects outside the store.  One suspect had purchased a large Halloween decoration and paid for it.  The suspect put the decoration in his truck. The suspect returned to the store and gave his receipt to his friend, who then selected the same ornament and a small plant.  He paid for the plant and when asked about the decoration, he showed the receipt his friend had given him.  The suspects were arrested for the above listed charges.

Unlicensed Driver / Gang Injunction – Suspects Arrested

October 25 at 10:42 p.m., an officer saw a vehicle heading south on Myrtle from Pomona with no headlights.  The vehicle was stopped at Alta Vista and Duarte.  The juvenile driver was unlicensed, and computer check indicated he had been served with the gang injunction; he was arrested.  Two passengers in the vehicle were also arrested, one had an outstanding warrant and the other one was also arrested for violation of the gang injunction.

Driving Under the Influence – Suspect Arrested

October 26 1:54 a.m., officers stopped a vehicle for speeding and following too close behind another vehicle at Huntington and Monterey.  The female driver displayed signs of intoxication.  She was determined to be driving under the influence and was arrested.

October 26 at 2:37 a.m., an officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation at Myrtle and Palm.  The male driver was determined to be under the influence of marijuana and was arrested.

Mental Evaluation

October 26 at 9:48 p.m., officers were dispatched to a hotel in the 700 of West Huntington regarding a male subject who was acting strange.  An officer located the subject and found him to be uncooperative, non-compliant, and paranoid.  The subject is from San Francisco and had psychiatric medication with him.  He was detained and taken to a hospital where he was held on a 72-hour hold for mental evaluation.

Shots Fired / Mental Evaluation

October 26 at 10:06 p.m., police dispatch received a call reporting shots fired from a residence in the 1800 block of South Mayflower.  Officers arrived and containment of the location was set up.  Attempts to contact the subject were started.  The suspect was seen in the front window of the residence and was told to come out by police.  He complied and was detained without further incident.  

Officers cleared the house and yard.  Several bullet holes were located on walls at the residence.  Officers canvassed the area for possible stray bullets to other properties, but none were located.  A handgun was located, along with several pellet rifles.  The suspect was detained and taken to a hospital, where he was held for 72-hour mental evaluation.

Vehicle Burglary

October 26 at 11:26 p.m., a vehicle burglary was reported in the 200 block of South Madison.  The victim parked his vehicle on the street and secured it.  When he returned to the vehicle, he saw the dome light was on and the rear hatch was ajar.  He found that his GPS, gym bag, flashlight, and cell phone charger had been taken.  The investigation is continuing.

Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

On October 26, Special Enforcement Team officers arrested a disturbing subject at a business in the 600 block of South Myrtle.  A consent search of the subject revealed he had a methamphetamine pipe on his person.  He was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Drunk in Public / Trespassing Warrant

On October 26, while on patrol, Special Enforcement Team officers observed an adult male subject hiding in the bushes near a church at the northwest corner of Palm and Encinitas.  They detained the subject and he was cited for drinking alcohol in public.  A computer check of the subject revealed he had an outstanding warrant for trespassing.  He was then arrested for the warrant and taken into custody.

Alcoholic Beverage Control Operation 

On October 26, Monrovia Police Department’s Special Enforcement Team (SET) officers and four Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) agents worked a Trap Door Operation and saturation patrol throughout the downtown area.  They arrested an 18-year-old male subject that was intoxicated and tried to enter a bar in the 300 block of South Myrtle.  He was arrested by an undercover officer at the door for being drunk in public.  Three undercover ABC agents requested assistance at a bar in the 400 block of South Myrtle.  SET officers arrived and arrested two male adults for being drunk in public.

Falling off the grid..and it can't happen fast enough

Highlighted Activity for the Week of October 21-23, 2013

Outside Assist / Alhambra Police Department – Rape Suspect Detained

October 21 at 5:39 p.m., officers responded to a business parking lot in the 200 block of West Huntington regarding a suspect wanted for rape by the Alhambra Police Department.  The victim saw the suspect in a vehicle parked in a parking lot and called police.  An officer responded, located the vehicle and detained the suspect.  The Alhambra Police Department was notified and responded to take custody of the suspect.

Runaway Juvenile Located

October 21 at 12:56 a.m., the Temple Sheriff’s Department called and requested an officer respond to a residence in the 1000 block of Royal Oaks regarding a runaway juvenile at the location.  The juvenile had run away from a boy’s home in the City of Chino.  An officer was dispatched to the residence and the juvenile was detained.  The juvenile was taken to East Lake Juvenile Hall.

Loud Explosion/Noise Heard

October 23 at 10:17 p.m., police dispatch received five calls reporting a loud explosion type noise coming from the area east of the 400 Block of South Mayflower.  Officers responded and searched the area reported, but they were unable to locate a cause.    

Tip of the Week

The Monrovia Police Department Wants You to Have a Safe and Happy Halloween

Here are some tips to keep your children safe:

·         Make sure your costume is easy to see.  Light colors or reflective tape are good to use.

·         Make sure that your costume is short enough so you won’t trip on it.

·         Carry a flashlight so you can see and people can see you.

·         Use make-up instead of a mask.

·         Go with friends and/or parents. Don’t go out alone.

·         Cross only at corners and never cross the street between parked cars.

·         Walk only on well-lit streets and stay on the sidewalks.

·         Wait until you get home to sort, check and eat your candy.  Check all your treats and throw away things that are not wrapped.

Make sure you call the police if you see anything that doesn’t look safe.

Highlighted Activity for the Weekend of October 17-20, 2013

Residential Burglary

October 17 at 3:30 p.m., a residential burglary was reported in the 600 block of Norumbega.  The victim left her residence at 2:30 p.m. and returned approximately an hour later.  When she returned, she discovered her front door had been pried open and the entire residence had been ransacked.  The loss is still undetermined at this time.  The investigation is continuing.

Commercial Burglary / Petty Theft / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia – Suspect Arrested

October 17 at 8:35 p.m., officers were dispatched to a business in the 400 block of West Huntington regarding a theft that had just occurred.  As the officers were arriving, a second business called reporting another theft that had just occurred, and the suspect description matched in both thefts.  The suspect was located and detained by police.  The suspect was carrying a backpack which contained stolen property from both stores.    He was also in possession of a methamphetamine pipe.  The suspect was positively identified and was arrested.  

Vehicle Burglary

October 18 at 4:14 p.m., a vehicle burglary was reported in the 400 block of West Olive.  The victim’s vehicle was parked between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 6:45 a.m. When he returned to his vehicle the following morning, he discovered a tool missing from the trunk.  The investigation is continuing.

Attempt Residential Burglary

October 18 at 6:14 p.m., an officer responded to the 100 block of North Fifth regarding the report of a residential burglary.  The incident occurred on October 16, between 8:00 a.m. and 1200 p.m.  The victim found a window screen pulled back and the gates leading to the rear of the location were open.  The investigation is continuing.

Vehicle Burglary

October 18 at 6:25 p.m., the manager of a business in the 800 block of West Huntington called to report her vehicle had been broken into between 3:00 and 6:20 p.m.  The victim parked her vehicle in the parking lot and left her purse inside the vehicle under the driver’s seat.  The rear driver side window was smashed and the victim's purse was taken.  The investigation is continuing.

Possession of Methamphetamine – Suspect Arrested

October 19 at 1:56 a.m., officers on patrol in the 400 block South Myrtle observed two subjects sitting at a patio table behind a business in the dark.  One of the subjects had his phone, cigarettes and lighters on the table, and his hands were also on the table.  When the officers moved him from the table, they found he had been concealing several methamphetamine crystals with his hands.  The crystals tested positive for methamphetamine.  The suspect was arrested.  During the booking process at the jail, a search of the suspect revealed an additional plastic baggie containing about 5 grams of methamphetamine crystals which he had concealed on his person.  The subject was charged with possession of a controlled substance and bringing contraband into a jail facility. 

Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol – Suspect Arrested

October 19 at 3:09 a.m., officers stopped a vehicle at Myrtle and Pamela for a traffic violation.  The driver was observed swerving over the line between lanes and then swerving back into his lane.  Upon further investigation, the driver was determined to be driving under the influence and was arrested.

Assault – Suspect Arrested

October 19 at 9:52 p.m., officers responded to the 200 block of Montana regarding disturbing subjects.  When they arrived, it was determined a father and son were having a verbal altercation, and the father struck the son on the head with a chair.  The son sustained a small cut on his left temple and a contusion on the left eye area.  He refused medical attention.  The father had been drinking and was arrested for assault.

Fight in Progress – Four Suspects Arrested

October 20 at 1:16 a.m., officers were dispatched to a hotel in the 700 block of West Huntington regarding ten people fighting in the lobby.  The manager pointed out a female subject and told the officer she had started the fight during a wedding reception.  Other officers arrived and moved further into the lobby area, where people were still pushing each other.  Officers from Arcadia Police Department were requested to assist.  In all, three subjects, two males and one female, were arrested for public intoxication, and one female was arrested for delaying and obstructing an officer.  The lobby was cleared and the guests dispersed.  

Battery

October 20 at 4:15 p.m., an assault incident was reported in the 100 block of West Foothill.  The victim was a 16-year-old male who was selling candy door-to-door.  He went into a business and was immediately told to leave and that he could not sell candy at the business.  As he left, he made a comment under his breath.  A coworker of the person the comment was directed at became angry and followed the victim outside. Once in the parking lot, he hit the victim three times in the face.  Witnesses began yelling at him to stop hitting the victim, and the suspect was pulled away by a coworker.  The case will be sent to the District Attorney for filing.

Possession of Methamphetamine / Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia – Suspect Arrested                                                           

October 20 at 11:55 p.m., an officer on patrol in the 2600 block of California stopped a motorist for a minor traffic violation.  Further investigation revealed the motorist was in possession of marijuana, methamphetamine, and three glass pipes.  The motorist was arrested and taken to jail for the above listed charges.

Highlighted Activity for the Week of October 10-16, 2013

Warrants – Suspect Arrested

October 12 at 11:58 a.m., an officer on patrol recognized a male subject who had outstanding warrants walking south on Buena Vista from Huntington.  A computer check confirmed the male subject did have three outstanding warrants for his arrest.  The subject was stopped and arrested for the warrants.

Driving Under the Influence – Suspect Arrested

October 13 at 2:01 a.m., and officer stopped a vehicle at Myrtle and the 210 Freeway.  The driver was speeding and swerved over the dividing line, straddling the line for approximately 40 feet.  Through investigation, the officer determined the driver was driving under the influence and he was arrested.

Vehicle Burglary

October 15 at 5:58 a.m., a vehicle burglary was reported in the 400 block of Monrovista.  The victim believes his vehicle was locked when he parked it.  There were no signs of forced entry.  Unknown suspect(s) entered the vehicle and took new clothing in boxes that was left in the vehicle.  The investigation is continuing. 

Shoplifting – Suspect Arrested

October 15 at 12:12 p.m., loss prevention personnel at a business in the 1600 block of South Mountain detained a female suspect for shoplifting.  The suspect was seen by loss prevention putting items into her purse and then exiting the store without paying for the merchandise.  She was arrested and taken into custody.

Red Ribbon Week Reminds Parents to Talk to Your Kids About Drugs

October 23 through 31, the Monrovia Police Department will celebrate Red Ribbon Week 2013.  Red Ribbon Week is a national campaign to raise awareness about substance abuse among our youth and our communities.  In 1985, DEA Agent Enrique, “Kiki,” Camarena was murdered by a drug cartel.  To honor his memory and to show support that we will continue the fight against illegal drugs, Monrovia Police Officers will wear red ribbons and red bracelets as part of our uniform to support the fight against illegal drugs, alcohol, and tobacco use.   

Parents are the most powerful influence in a child’s life in preventing drug use, alcohol use, and other risking behavior.  Talk to your children early about drugs before they become involved.  Be involved in their lives, keep them occupied with activities, spend time with them, and know who their friends are.  Drug abuse can start at a very young age, so you need to know who your children are with at all times.  One of the hardest things as a parent is knowing how to keep your child away from drugs and alcohol.

Annoying Phone Calls / Grandparent Scam

October 7 at 3:22 p.m., a phone scam was reported from a resident in the 100 block of North Magnolia.  The resident received calls telling her that her grandson was in jail in Puerto Vallarta.  The caller wanted 10,000 dollars in 100 dollar bills placed throughout a magazine and mailed to a location in New York.  The victim stopped and confirmed both of her grandsons were in the United States, and then reported the incident to police.  The victim did not suffer any loss.

Fight in Progress / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia / Warrant – Suspects Arrested

October 8 at 9:25 p.m., officers responded to a hotel in the 900 block of South Fifth Avenue on the report of two male subjects fighting in the hotel hallway.  One of the suspects left the location prior to the officers arriving.  Officers located the other male suspect in a hotel room, along with two female subjects.  One of the females was arrested for an outstanding warrant out of San Bernardino, and the second female was arrested for possession of a methamphetamine pipe.  A baggie of methamphetamine was found in the hotel, which possibly belonged to the outstanding male suspect.

Grandparent Scam – Don’t Be a Victim

The suspects in this type of scam will call an elderly person and pretend to be a grandchild or young relative of the victim.  They tell the elderly victim they are in some type of trouble and are in jail, and that they need bail money.  They ask the elderly person not to tell their parents.  A second suspect then calls pretending to be the police and proceeds to give the victim instructions on were to wire the bail money.  

The suspects target older folks, hoping they can gain an emotional and quick response to the "need" to help out the young relative, and many times it works.  The victims will quickly go to their bank, withdraw and transfer the money in an attempt to help, and by the time they realize the scam, the money has already been picked up by the suspects and is gone.

It is so important to spread awareness and to educate those that we know in hopes of preventing this crime from happening.  If you have a loved one, a friend, or perhaps a neighbor that is older, share this information with them and help keep them from becoming a victim.
