City to the rescue with a branch drop

Virtually all of the trees on the street planted at the curb line are City Trees and they are responsible for the maintenance of them.  If one of those trees is in need of trimming, or heavens forbid, has a branch break like yesterday call them at 626-932-5550 and ask for Services to come out and inspect and trim as needed.

MPD on street last night 7:30PM

As many were aware last night MPD was on the street.  I did ask as requested by some of you when they were done, what the issue was.  Their answer was "incident resolved".  I asked specifically it it were a burglary and I got that response, assume it wasn't.

Block Party Reboot hit a snag...

Good afternoon all.  Laurie Cohen has been a bulldog with the city trying to get all the rules and regulations in order so we could have an old fashioned block party like we used to do.  Here is what she found:

First order, if we get 80% of signature on the street we'd have to block off the street at Foothill, not where the street forks in the 200 block.  That means all the folks at the bottom of the hill who never participate for whatever personal reasons they have, would have to sign off on the party as well.  I don't see that happening.

Second order of discussion, even if we block the street we can't put out any tables, games etc., in the street.  It would all have to be in a yard(s) where we have a large flat section for tables etc., as the street has to remain open for emergency vehicles.

After looking at the two obstacles we've hit in rebooting the party I need you to talk with each other and figure out who's yard(s) we could use for a block party.  Absent that this idea will have to just wither on the vine and I don't think we want that to happen.

Please talk with Laurie (lzelby1@gmail.com) or myself (frazgo@msn.com) with your ideas and we'll share here and personally.  I so want this to happen and have the street return to the big happy family it was when we first moved here.

Block Party Votes are in July 4 is the winner

The votes are in. July 4 was the most optioned date for the Block Party.

Shortly we, Laurie Cohen and myself will go door to door getting signatures of the neighbors to get the permit from the city for the block party.  ( No cost....just need 80% approval).

Put your thinking caps on...what sort of games and or entertainment would you like to see at this years party?  What time of day...hours of operation?  Sound off in the comments or let us know when we visit for your signature.

Poop...if you See Something Say Something!

We've got a problem with people letting their dogs poop, crap, whatever you call it and not picking it up.

Honestly, we walk with a bag to pick up puppy droppings should they have to relieve themselves so should others.

I've had words with a few people already letting their dogs poop in our yard and walk away.  If you see someone dog crap in a yard and leave it, SAY SOMETHING.  (The two I've exchanged words with weren't even residents of our street!)

If you know where they live, return the droppings on their stoop...

Several Cars and 2 homes vandalized or burglarized on street

One of our neighbors in the 170ish area came up to alert me to the fact that we have had several cars broken into the last few nights on the street.  Hers was one where they busted down a window to get in.

Additionally she advised at least one home was broken into with "stuff taken" and one home vandalized in the last 2 days.

Its time for a Neighborhood Watch meeting again.  I'll contact the new officer in charge to set it up and share with you all the date.

Alert your neighbors to the problem we are having.  If you see something, report it to MPD and see me.

Not that anything has happened in our 'hood in recent weeks.  The 3 hot prowl burglary in our area over the last weekend raises concern.

Sound off in the comments if you think we should have a Neighborhood Watch meeting soon to discuss how to protect ourselves and meet some of the newer folks in the neighborhood as well as our new Neighborhood Watch Officer on MPD.

Monrovia sent due bill by State - potential huge tax increase coming

This is to give a heads up as to a potential increase in property taxes or water bill depending on how the $250M+ bill sent to us is going to be paid.

A little back ground information.  The state water agency, comprised of appointed officials, not elected officials has decided Los Angeles County doesn't recover enough rainfall and work it back into our water system.  Fair enough.  They came up with a plan that costs the county some $20Billion dollars that will be needed to implement it.

They are using some new AB rule that allows state agencies to circumvent the voters and bill cities and counties direct which in turn leaves them with the nasty business of figuring out how to pay the bill via taxes or fees added to water bills.

According to Gloria Crudgington at this weeks city council meeting the city and city attorney are looking at options to resist this due bill but things don't look promising.

What does this meant to us?  The city is left with 2 options to pay this bill for works required under the state water agency plan.  A property tax assessment that will add about $2,000 per assessed value of $500,000.  Or as another option is to add it as a fee that works out to about $200/mo to our water bill.  End result is that state doesn't care how its paid, just that it will be paid and we get to grab our ankles and enjoy the ride.

Several citizens are working with the city to find out what we can do to stop this.  As options are known I'll share with you all here. Things like letter writing, calls to representatives and phone banks to get awareness of the problem have all been discussed at this point.

Its not a Neighborhood Watch Issue...but its an eyesore

I've gotten a few complaints about the new folks on the east side of the loop around 281 with the RV/Trailer, work trucks and junk trailer parked on the street.

Parking more than 72 hours without moving is a Municipal Code issue. Or if it keeps you from getting in and out of your driveway, call Parking Enforcement: (626) 256-8000 -dont call 911

If its just an eyesore, call Code Enforcement and voice your concerns.  From  the city web site:

Report a Complaint

The City of Monrovia Code Enforcement Division is broken down by east and west.
To report a complaint on the East Side (east of Myrtle Avenue), contact Officer Rick Macias, (626) 932-5545 or rmacias@ci.monrovia.ca.us

Great Neighborhood Watch Meeting

Thanks to all who came last night.  It was a good meeting, always interesting to see what's going on around town and learn about crime trends.  Of course, its always great to spend a little time with each other.

Sergeant Patty Newton was awesome.  She's a great resource for us.  If you need to contact her for concerns please do so directly via email  pnewton@monrovia.laclen.org  .  If you'd cc me frazgo@MSN.com that would keep me in the loop as well.

Later today I'll scan and route the sign in sheet around so we know each other a little better and can more easily reach should we have an immediate problem.
