MPD on street last night 7:30PM

As many were aware last night MPD was on the street.  I did ask as requested by some of you when they were done, what the issue was.  Their answer was "incident resolved".  I asked specifically it it were a burglary and I got that response, assume it wasn't.

Community Meeting hosted by MPD 12/8/2016

HOLIDAY PUBLIC SAFETY TIPS SEMINAR (“DON’T LET THE GRINCH RUIN CHRISTMAS!”) COORDINATED BY THE POLICE DEPARTMENT, SET TO TAKE PLACE ON DECEMBER 8, 2016, FROM 7:00 P.M. TO 8:00 P.M. IN THE LIBRARY COMMUNITY ROOM
During the past year, public safety concerns in Monrovia have become more pressing as the City has, during 2016, seen an approximate 20% increase in crime activity when compared with last year. There are a variety of reasons for this increase, and as our Police Department has analyzed the data, part of the reason for the increase in crime is because of new laws that have been adopted in California. Those new laws include AB 109 and Proposition 47, and with Proposition 57 having recently been approved, an additional 10,000 incarcerated individuals will be released from prison during the next few months, which could further negatively impact crime rates.
Given the approaching holiday season, and given the increase in criminal activity, the City has developed a public safety tips event for the public that we hope you’ll participate in! The Monrovia Police Department will be leading the discussion, which has been dubbed, “Don’t Let the Grinch Ruin Christmas!”
The special event will be held on Thursday, December 8, 2016, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Library (321 South Myrtle Avenue). At the event, representatives from the Monrovia Police Department will run through different ways that you can stay safe, especially during the holiday season! In addition… we’ll have a variety of terrific special prizes that will be raffled off to event participants!
We know that there are a lot of demands on your time, especially during the holiday season! However, we hope that you will take an hour of your day to come and hear about public safety issues occurring in Monrovia and ways that you can stay safe!

Interested in Motion Detector Light project

Please click the poster to make it larger for all the details.  In short we need all interested parties in the motion light project to email me and get on the list so we can talk with an electrician and get a group discount bid to get the work done.

Neighborhood Watch Wrap up...what to look for in coming days

A few things came up in the Neighborhood Watch meeting last night.  People want more specifics of what happens on our street.  To that end feed me the factual information and I will publish it here.

Folks want more lights.  The most effective way to do this that is also cost effective is to add motion detectors to our homes.  To help make that happen and worthwhile for an electrician is to have several us do it at once.  Lauri Cohen will help me coordinate electricians and homeowners who want to have motion detectors lights put on their homes in the front and back.

Neighborhood Watch Meeting 6/16/2016

Just a reminder, 6:30PM Thursday 6/6 at 225 Poinsettia Avenue is the next Neighborhood Watch Meeting.

In the mean time if you value it, don't leave it in the car.  Lock your cars when you park for the night.  Lock your home when you leave, even if for a few minutes.

3rd night in less than a week cars burglarized on street

For the third night in less than a week several cars were burglarized on the street.  Several of the victims admitted to leaving their cars unlocked.  Locking the cars seems to be the most effective deterrent to these "handle checkers" who walk the street late at night looking for unlocked cars.

IF YOU VALUE IT TAKE IT OUT OF THE CAR AND LOCK THE CAR.

The most alarming instance took place at 4:30AM.  Ron saw a neighbors car being burglarized, attempted to be opened with tools and called the police.  It took 20 minutes for the police to arrive.(Edit 6/8 according to MPD records it was 9-11 minutes from time of call to arrival on the scene).

June 16, 6:30PM is the next Neighborhood Watch Meeting.  Flyers to go out this week.  Please encourage those around you to attend.  In the meeting we want to make it clear we want routine patrols of the street at night to help minimize the "handle checkers" that come up here unimpeded.

Several Cars and 2 homes vandalized or burglarized on street

One of our neighbors in the 170ish area came up to alert me to the fact that we have had several cars broken into the last few nights on the street.  Hers was one where they busted down a window to get in.

Additionally she advised at least one home was broken into with "stuff taken" and one home vandalized in the last 2 days.

Its time for a Neighborhood Watch meeting again.  I'll contact the new officer in charge to set it up and share with you all the date.

Alert your neighbors to the problem we are having.  If you see something, report it to MPD and see me.

Highlights April 19-21, 2016

Vandalism
April 18 at 7:54 a.m., officers were dispatched to a preschool in the 1000 block of S. Canyon regarding a vandalism incident. Unknown suspect had written graffiti on a school fence, which faced the adjacent park. The graffiti occurred sometime over the weekend. The investigation is continuing.
Residential Burglary
April 18 at 10:47 a.m., a residential burglary was reported in the 600 block of Parker. The victim locked his residence and left on April 17. When he returned home on April 18, he found the backdoor of the residence unlocked. Cash, a wristwatch and a speaker were stolen from the location. It appears the suspect unlocked the backdoor by reaching through an open dog door. The investigation is continuing.
Driving Under the Influence – Suspect Arrested
April 19 at 12:59 a.m., an officer stopped a vehicle for several vehicle code violations. Upon contacting the driver, he noticed signs of intoxication. After conducting field sobriety tests, the officer arrested the driver for driving under the influence. The suspect was taken into custody and held for sobering.
Felony Evading – Suspect Arrested
April 19 at 12:58 p.m., an officer responded to the 100 block of N. Mountain on the report of a suspicious vehicle, possibly casing the neighborhood. The officer located the suspect vehicle at Foothill and Mountain. When he attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver fled south on Mountain and entered the 210 Freeway, heading eastbound. The suspect was driving erratically at a high rate of speed and traffic conditions were heavy, so Monrovia police canceled the pursuit by police units. The Foothill Air Support Team helicopter continued to follow the vehicle and the California Highway Patrol picked up pursuit of the vehicle in San Bernardino County. The suspect and passenger in the vehicle were stopped by CHP and taken into custody for felony evading.
Warrant – Suspect Arrested
April 20 at 9:53 p.m., a business in the 100 block of W. Duarte called police to report a distrubing subject. Police arrived and detained the subject as he was leaving the location. A computer check revealed the subject had a "no bail" parole warrant. He was arrested and taken into custody for the warrant.
Bicycle Theft
April 20 at 11:13 p.m., a bicycle was reported stolen from the 400 block of S. Mayflower. The bicycle was taken from the property sometime during the day while the victim was away from the residence. The investigation is ongoing.

Time for a Neighborhood Watch Meeting?

Not that anything has happened in our 'hood in recent weeks.  The 3 hot prowl burglary in our area over the last weekend raises concern.

Sound off in the comments if you think we should have a Neighborhood Watch meeting soon to discuss how to protect ourselves and meet some of the newer folks in the neighborhood as well as our new Neighborhood Watch Officer on MPD.

Theft from Vehicle 2 nights in a row last week on Poinsettia

In review of the weekly neighborhood watch report and an incident reported directly to me its a bit concerning that we have people prowling our street at night and stuff is getting stolen.

I'll call MPD and ask that they make a routine of patrolling our street after dark again.

Do we need another neighborhood watch meeting?  If so let me know in person or in the comments and I'll arrange.

Theft from parked truck on our street

Overnight someone stole some head lights out of the back of a trucked parked on the East side of the street.  No idea what time of the night it was.  It would have been between 11PM on Saturday night and 8AM Sunday morning.

Anyone see anything?  Anyone else hit?

Anyone think we need a Neighborhood Watch meeting to discuss what we can do about prowlers after we are in bed with the new Neighborhood Watch commander with MPD?

Prowler/Trespasser early morning hours June 17, 2015

Not only did we have a trespasser on the street.  Lee took the time to call MPD who responded and apprehended him.  She then took it a step further and posted the info on the Next Door website so neighbors in the area off our street were aware as well.

The app screen shot you are looking is for Next Door.com  which the city set us up on.  Its an interesting site where all sorts of information takes place with lots of discussions.  Most of it is insipid drivel, but there are good tidbits like this that redeem it.

Its not a Neighborhood Watch Issue...but its an eyesore

I've gotten a few complaints about the new folks on the east side of the loop around 281 with the RV/Trailer, work trucks and junk trailer parked on the street.

Parking more than 72 hours without moving is a Municipal Code issue. Or if it keeps you from getting in and out of your driveway, call Parking Enforcement: (626) 256-8000 -dont call 911

If its just an eyesore, call Code Enforcement and voice your concerns.  From  the city web site:

Report a Complaint

The City of Monrovia Code Enforcement Division is broken down by east and west.
To report a complaint on the East Side (east of Myrtle Avenue), contact Officer Rick Macias, (626) 932-5545 or rmacias@ci.monrovia.ca.us
To report a complaint on the West Side (west of Myrtle Avenue), contact Officer Ken True (626) 932-5535 or ktrue@ci.monrovia.ca.us .
YES- you may make an anonymous call.

Great Neighborhood Watch Meeting

Thanks to all who came last night.  It was a good meeting, always interesting to see what's going on around town and learn about crime trends.  Of course, its always great to spend a little time with each other.

Sergeant Patty Newton was awesome.  She's a great resource for us.  If you need to contact her for concerns please do so directly via email  pnewton@monrovia.laclen.org  .  If you'd cc me frazgo@MSN.com that would keep me in the loop as well.

Later today I'll scan and route the sign in sheet around so we know each other a little better and can more easily reach should we have an immediate problem.

Neighborhood Watch Block Meeting April 7, 6:30PM

Block the date and be ready to bring your lawn chair.  April 7, 2015 at 6:30PM will be the next Neighborhood Watch Meeting.  The meeting will be presented by Sergeant Patty Newton.  My house...details on the flyer to be distributed to the event.

This meeting is being set up after a rash of burglaries reported on  NextDoor in the area.  There was an unfortunate attempted break in in one of the homes at the top of the street a few weeks ago.

Awareness doesn't hurt.  Knowing all our neighbors will make a world of difference.

Get the word out.  I look forward to seeing you all soon.

Home Burglary on the Rise? Do we need a Neighborhood Watch Meeting?

This is from the Nextdoor website.  One of our neighbors a street over posted it.

"

Scott BednarGrand Ave
So I had the cops at my house today cause my boys where on the roof getting the dogs ball down that they had kicked on the roof guess they thought my boys where robbing the place anyway. The very cool cop informed me that they are and j quote getting hammered in are area with home robberys average 4 to 5 per day. Said they come in mace the dog if you have one kick the sh$& out of the dog and take everything. I don't reall mind to much if they take everything but if my dog gets hurt!!!! That's a whole different thing. So I guess what I'm saying is lock your doors. Oh yeah I have video cameras so if you think you see something or someone one on or around my street let me know I may have them on video.
Peace Monrovia !!!!!!
S"

This is interesting and its been a good year since we last had any homes burglarized on the street.  With so many new faces maybe we need to have another Neighborhood Watch Meeting to meet everyone and learn more on what we can do to prevent burglaries of our homes?  If interested sound of in the comments or stop by and let me know and I'll contact MPD to get it set up.

Be Aware, Auto Burglary up in our area of town

Just a quick note to ya'll that we need to remain diligent with keeping our cars and homes locked if we want to keep our stuff.

An alert was sent out and the SGV News posted it on their Crime Scene Blog.  In short there has been a rash of car burglary's North of Foothill, that us.  All the cars that had stuff taken from them were UNLOCKED.  Full blog post HERE.

One last quick note, if you haven' joined NEXTDOOR yet, you should.  We are in the Grand Avenue neighborhood.  That site is full of neighbors sharing information, good, bad and indifferent.  NEXTDOOR is supported and promoted by the Monrovia Area Partnership to help build stronger neighborhoods.  If you are iPhone enabled...there is even the NEXTDOOR app that allows you to get alerts sent directly to your phone no matter where you are.
