A Bear on the Street this Morning

The Acs family, who live where the street forks spotted a bear on their security camera this morning at 8AM. It meandered up the street and out of sight before they could get out to see where it was or call MPD/Animal Control.   Remember we're in bear territory, not vice versa so be alert and if you see one get inside and call MPD and Animal control.

On the topic of wild critters. Kathleen still sees the odd coyote on the street when she leaves for the train.  Don't keep food outside for pets as that attracts coyotes and makes this their hunting territory.

Tip of the Week

“Be Bear Aware” – The Weather is Warming Up and the Bears are Back in the Foothills
May is “Be Bear Aware” Month and the Monrovia Police Department and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife want to remind the public to act responsibly when in bear country.  Spring is the time of year when California’s black bears emerge from their winter dens in search of food.  Because bears are attracted to anything edible or smelly, their search often leads them into residential neighborhoods, where trash and food is readily available.  Throughout spring and summer, CDFW receives many calls when bears break into homes and rummage through trash bins.  These bears are often labeled “nuisance” bears, but in reality they are just doing what comes naturally to them, foraging for food.

Tips for Bear-Proofing Your Home:

Bears have keen noses and can smell an easy meal from miles away. They can easily tear a front door off its hinges if they smell food left out on the kitchen counter. To protect your family and property from bear break-ins follow these simple tips:

•   Purchase and properly use a bear-proof garbage container.
•   Wait to put trash out until the morning of collection day.
•   Don’t leave trash, groceries, or animal feed in your car.
•   Keep garbage cans clean and deodorize them with bleach or ammonia.
•   Keep barbecue grills clean and stored in a garage or shed when not in use.
•   Only provide bird feeders during November through March and make them inaccessible to bears.
•   Don’t leave any scented products outside, even non-food items such as suntan lotion, insect repellent, soap or candles.
•   Keep doors and windows closed and locked.
•   Consider installing motion-detector alarms, electric fencing or motion-activated sprinklers.
•   Harvest fruit off trees as soon as it is ripe, and promptly collect fruit that falls.
•   Securely block access to potential hibernation sites such as crawl spaces under decks and buildings.

Following are some informative videos and information from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to help you “Be Bear Aware!”

Bear in the 'hood 6/2/11 around midnight

We had a bear and MPD responded to the call shortly before midnight last night. It was prowling back yards in the NE corner of the street looking for food. It did upend a trashcan and strew the contents about looking for food. MPD used bean bags shot from a gun to scare the intruder away.

Neighbors discussing felt that this was a Neighborhood Watch issue, and it is to a degree. What can we do about it is the most common question raised once MPD officers on sight told those gathered that this is the 3rd bear call this year, earlier and lower down the hill than usual that they have responded too. The officer opined to those there, my daughter Kari specifically, that they expect this to continue and be one of the worse summers for bear intrusions into neighborhoods.

What can you do about it? Simply removing potential food sources like garbage cans that they are looking for food in. Storing garbage cans behind locked gates will help to a degree. Storing them in garages will help more, but seriously, who has spare space in a garage for a garbage can on this street?

Also to keep bears at bay (and other critters like skunks, 'coons, coyote's and the like) don't leave pet food out for them at night on your porches or in your back yards. That alone will help keep the unwanted critters at bay and looking elsewhere.

If you do have a wild animal in your yard call 911 or MPD Cell Watch at 626-357-2355 to report the incident. MPD and Animal Control will respond quickly like they did last night to scare the animals away as needed.

Make sure the new neighbors are aware of this blog...and that we have a Neighborhood Watch. Do we need another Neighborhood Watch Meeting to talk about this and any other crime issues in the neighborhood that we haven't already addressed?
