Highlighted Activity - Week of June 3 - June 9, 2010

During the last seven day period, the Police Department handled 662 service events, resulting in 131 investigations. Following are the last week's highlighted issues and events:

Domestic Battery - Suspect Arrested

June 3 at 10:57 a.m., officers responded to the 400 block of South Violet regarding two male roommates involved in a verbal fight. One of the subjects began throwing items toward the bare feet of the other. The other subject, in self defense, grabbed a kitchen knife to keep the first subject at bay, but did not advance toward him. The primary aggressor was determined to be the subject who initially threw the items. He was arrested for domestic battery, cited and released.

Driving Under the Influence / Traffic Collision - Suspect Arrested

June 5 at 5:59 p.m., police received a call of a possible drunk driver in the area of Huntington and Magnolia and then a second call of a vehicle involved in a hit and run collision. The description of the vehicle was the same in both calls. Officers arrived, located the vehicle, and stopped it in the 300 block of North Myrtle. During the investigation, it was determined the driver was under the influence. The driver was arrested.

Driving Under the Influence - Suspect Arrested

June 6 at 2:30 a.m., an officer on patrol noticed a vehicle in front of him swerving on the roadway. He stopped the vehicle in the area of Cherry and California and contacted the driver. During the investigation, it was determined the driver was under the influence and he was arrested.

Bear Incident

On June 5, a bear had been seen by Los Angeles Sheriff's Deputies in the City of Duarte, below Duarte Road at approximately 9:00 p.m. in the evening. Deputies attempted to encourage the bear north toward the foothills with the assistance of a helicopter, but the bear fled and concealed it self in the shrubbery. He was later seen again in the area of Buena and the 210 Freeway. The bear eventually went onto the Freeway and California Highway Patrol closed down the Freeway. The bear left the Freeway and hid again, out of sight.

On the morning of June 6 at approximately 5:37 a.m., the same bear was sighted in the City of Monrovia and officers were dispatched to assist Sheriff's deputies and the Department of Fish and Game. The bear was now in the bushes of a car dealership at Central and Mountain. Officers responded and assisted Fish and Game in locating the bear. The bear was eventually tranquilized and taken back into the mountains by Fish and Game.

Grand Theft Auto Recovery - Suspects Arrested

June 6 at 10:55 p.m., an officer saw a motorist run a stop sign northbound on Primrose at Huntington. The officer attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle and it yielded in the 200 block of West Olive. The driver immediately exited the vehicle and fled. The officer broadcast the suspect's location and detained the female passenger who had remained inside the vehicle. A computer check of the vehicle's license plate revealed it was reported stolen from the Temple City area.

A containment of the area was established with the assistance of Arcadia patrol officers, the Foothill Air Support Team helicopter, and canine units from Irwindale and El Monte. The suspect was ultimately located hiding inside a shed in a backyard of a residence in the 200 block of West Olive. The suspect sustained a dog bite to his left leg and was taken to a hospital, where he was medically treated and released. The suspect was brought to Monrovia Police Department for booking. The suspect is a registered sex offender and had an outstanding parole hold. The suspect and his female passenger had shaved vehicle keys in their possession and were additionally charged for possession of burglary tools. The female passenger was cited and released.

Outside Agency Assist / Warrants / Possession of Narcotics - Suspects Arrested

June 7, personnel from the Department of Justice called to advise they were in the 800 block of West Huntington on surveillance. They provided their information and requested our assistance in making a traffic stop on a suspect's vehicle when it went mobile. The vehicle eventually went mobile and an officer responded to make the traffic stop. Three occupants were detained. Two subjects were arrested on warrants and the primary suspect was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, which was found in the vehicle.

Grand Theft Recovery

June 8 at 8:55 a.m., an officer was driving in the 600 block of West Colorado when she located a possible stolen vehicle. She located the vehicle parked in front of a residence in the 600 block of West Colorado. A computer check confirmed the vehicle had been reported stolen. The vehicle is a 2000, black Honda Civic. The vehicle was locked and did not have any damage, but the stereo was missing. The victim responded to take possession of his vehicle and confirmed the stereo had been stolen. Investigation continuing.

Indecent Exposure

June 8 at 11:42 a.m., the assistant principal of a middle school in the 100 block of West Duarte reported an indecent exposure incident. On June 7, a female student was walking to school when a male subject in a black vehicle approached her and exposed himself. Officers checked the area for the subject but were unable to locate him. Investigation continuing.

Suspicious Subject / Grand Theft Auto Recovery

June 8 at 2:02 p.m., a resident in the 800 block of West Foothill reported a strange vehicle in the alley with a male occupant inside. The caller reported that the subject appeared to be going through women's purses. As the officer arrived at the alley, the subject drove away and the officer followed the vehicle. The suspect eventually stopped the vehicle on Madison by the alley north of Foothill and fled eastbound on foot. Officers responded and established a perimeter. The Foothill Air Support Team helicopter responded to assist, as well as Arcadia Police Department officers. The suspect was not located. The suspect's vehicle was recovered and was found to be a reported stolen out of Pasadena Police Department. Investigation continuing.

Grand Theft

June 9 at 7:32 a.m., an officer responded to a call in the 300 block of Valle Vista. The victim was reporting his tools were taken from the bed of his pick up truck. The vehicle was parked in the driveway of his residence. Investigation continuing.

Vehicle Burglary

June 8 at 7:46 a.m., an officer went to a residence in the 200 block of North Encinitas. The victim was reporting someone had stolen his stereo from his vehicle. The vehicle was parked in the driveway and there were no signs of forced entry. Investigation continuing.

Grand Theft Vehicle

June 9 at 9:04 a.m., an officer responded to the 200 block of North Grand regarding a stolen vehicle. The victim left her vehicle unlocked and a set of keys in the vehicle. The vehicle was stolen from the driveway of her residence. Investigation continuing.

Vehicle Burglary

June 9 at 9:38 a.m., an officer went to a residence in the 600 block of West Palm. The victim was reporting his vehicle was broken into and his amplifier and stereo was taken. The vehicle was parked on the street in front of his residence and there were no signs of forced entry. Investigation continuing.

Possession of Marijuana

June 9 at 11:25 a.m., Monrovia High School conducted a K-9 narcotic sweep at the high school and found marijuana on two students. An officer responded to the high school and cited both students.
