Tip of the Week

Back to School Traffic Safety
Children of all ages are returning back to school, and with students going back to school, traffic congestion will be increased on the road and drivers will need to be extra cautious.  Whether in a school zone or a residential neighborhood, drivers need to remember to slow down and be prepared to stop.  The speed limit in school zones and residential neighborhoods is 25 miles per hour, unless posted otherwise; some school zones may have speed limits as low as 15 miles per hour.

Always stop for school buses.  Flashing yellow lights on a school bus indicate it is preparing to stop to load or unload children, and drivers should slow down and prepare to stop.  Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate the bus has stopped, and children are getting on and off.  Drivers are required to stop their vehicles and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop sign is withdrawn and the bus begins moving before they can start driving again.  The greatest risk to children is not riding on the bus, but getting on and off the bus.

Always drive more carefully near schools, playgrounds, parks, and residential areas because children may suddenly dart into the street from between parked cars and other objects along the roadway.  Also, many children have not yet developed the ability to judge speeds and distances well enough to cross streets safely when cars are moving fast.  Drivers need to stay alert and obey traffic signs, especially where children may be present.  Slow down and stay alert to help keep children safe!

Tip of the Week

Vacation Time Home Security
It’s summertime, and before you decide to pack up the family and go on vacation, take a few precautions to keep your home safe while you are away.  Be cautious of who you tell about your vacation.  Its okay to let a trusted neighbor know when and where you are going, just don’t broadcast it to your whole neighborhood.  And don’t post the fact that you are going on vacation on social network sites for anyone to see; a friend of a friend of your friend just could be a burglar.

Also, take a few steps to make potential burglars believe someone is actually home.  Hook up a timer to lights, televisions and radios, so they go on and off while you are away.  Adjust the time setting to your normal routine.  Make sure that everything is locked up and secure before you head out; double check sheds, windows, garage doors, and any other opportunistic locations.  Have the post office hold your mail or have a trusted neighbor collect your mail for you, as well as your newspaper.  Don’t allow newspapers to stack up in your driveway; an obvious clue to thieves that no one is home.

Another precaution you can take is to turn off the ringer to your phone.  An unanswered phone might tip off a prowler that you are away.  Don’t leave a message on your answering machine announcing your vacation to callers.  If you have a home security system, call your company and let them know you will be on vacation and notify local law enforcement, as well, so they can keep an extra eye on your home while you are away.

Police Chiefs Dismayed over Supreme Court’s Decision to Release Prisoners

California’s Police Chiefs are extremely disappointed in today's Supreme Court decision to release up to 10,000 additional convicted criminals back into our communities,” said Covina Police Chief Kim Raney, president of the California Police Chiefs Association.

“Despite the requests of the Governor, the California State Sheriffs, and the California Police Chiefs, all who are still dealing with the early impacts of Realignment on California's criminal justice system and rising crime rates in California, the Court majority apparently decided to place convicted criminals’ concerns over the safety of California's communities and citizens. The Court refused to consider the improvements made in California’s prisons and the already reduced population figures  and chose instead to allow for the release of more felons into already overburdened communities,” emphasized Chief Raney.

The California Police Chiefs Association represents the state’s municipal police chiefs whose agencies protect over 78 percent of the citizens of California.

Tip of the Week

Beat the Heat – Check the Back Seat
Never leave your child alone in a vehicle – It’s the LawCalifornia Law Requires: That a parent, legal guardian, or other person responsible for a child who is 6 years of age or younger, may not leave that child inside a motor vehicle without the supervision of someone 12 years of age or older.

Between May of 1998 to May of 2012, 527 children died of hyperthermia from being left alone in a motor vehicle in the United States.  This is a completely preventable statistic.  On a mild day of 80 degrees, the inside of a vehicle can heat quickly.  In only 10 minutes raising the inside temperature of the vehicle to 99 degrees, in 20 minutes to 109 degrees, in 30 minutes to 114 degrees, and 60 minutes to 123 degrees.  It is never safe to leave a child alone in a parked car because the sun’s radiation warms objects inside of the car, such as the dashboard, steering wheel, child seat, etc., then these heated objects quickly heat the trapped air inside of the car, similarly to that of a convection oven.

What can you do?  Never leave a child alone in a vehicle.  Once you reach your destination; make sure that all occupants leave the vehicle when unloading; take all children, including sleeping infants, with you; lock your vehicle doors and trunks; and keep the keys out of the reach of children.  This information is provided by the County of Los Angeles Public Health Department
