Highlighted Activity - Week of July 22 - July 28, 2010

During the last seven day period, the Police Department handled 526 service events, resulting in 90 investigations. Following are the last week's highlighted issues and events:

Grand Theft - Suspect Arrested July 22 at 2:03 p.m., a police officer was dispatched to the 300 block of South Myrtle regarding the theft of a laptop computer from a subject who had fallen asleep at a desk in the library. An employee from the library remembered seeing a subject quickly walk out of the library holding a black laptop computer. The employee recognized the subject as a local transient who frequents the library. While interviewing the employee, the employee recognized a subject who is frequently with the suspect. The officer spoke with this subject, who he knew from previous contacts is the father-in-law of the suspect. A photo line-up with the suspect's picture was shown to the employee, who positively identified the suspect. The suspect is a known drug user and local transient.

Approximately half an hour later, an officer located the suspect in the area of Primrose, south of Foothill. The officer detained the suspect and arrested him for grand theft. The suspect admitted to the crime and agreed to show the officer the residence where he left the stolen laptop. Officers transported the suspect to the location in the area of Magnolia and Lemon, where they recovered the stolen laptop computer. The stolen computer was returned to the victim.

Gang Injunction Violation - Suspect Arrested July 22 at 7:08 p.m., Special Enforcement Team Officers were in the 2000 block of South Myrtle and recognized two male gang members walking on the street, which they had previously served with the gang injunction. They stopped the subjects and arrested them for violating the gang injunction.

Disturbance / Possession of a Controlled Substance - Suspect Arrested July 22 at 7:37 p.m., an officer responded to a disturbance call. Upon arrival, he stopped a subject and questioned him regarding the call for service. The subject admitted he had been in an argument prior to the officer arriving and said he was in possession of a knife. The knife was retrieved and in the blade area, the officer located a small plastic baggie containing methamphetamine. The subject was arrested.

Mental Evaluation July 24 at 8:36 a.m., an officer was dispatched to the 300 block of Genoa regarding a mentally disturbed subject. The subject in question has a history of mental illness; he said he was hearing voices and hurt his hand breaking a mirror. The officer determined the subject was a danger to himself and placed a 72-hour mental observation hold on the subject. The subject was transported to a hospital.

Family Disturbance / Vandalism July 24 at 2:39 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 1800 block of California regarding a family disturbance between two siblings, a 19 year old brother and his 22 year old sister. The investigation revealed that only an argument had occurred and both parties were advised. The officers then left the location.

After the officers left the location, the brother vandalized his sister's vehicle, stereo system, and a bookshelf. The suspect fled the scene after vandalizing the property. Officers searched the area for the suspect, but were not able to locate him. Investigation continuing.

Domestic Violence - Suspect Arrested July 24 at 8:12 p.m., an off-duty San Gabriel police officer was at a business in the 800 block of East Huntington when he was approached by a female subject. She claimed her girlfriend beat her up and stole her cell phone. She asked the off-duty officer if he would call the police. The officer called police for the victim. Moments later, the girlfriend arrived and began to physically assault the victim. The officer immediately called Monrovia Police Department, identified himself to the suspect, and physically restrained the suspect in order to prevent the victim from being injured. Monrovia police officers arrived and arrested the suspect.

Residential Burglary July 24 at 9:31 p.m., an officer investigated a residential burglary in the 500 block of Royal Oaks. The suspects smashed a window to gain entry to the residence. Investigation continuing.

Vehicle Burglary - Suspect Arrested July 26 at 7:18 a.m., officers were conducting a follow-up investigation regarding a vehicle burglary report. They went to the location in the 200 block of West Olive to further their investigation and subsequently arrested a suspect. Several items stolen from the burglary were observed by the officers in plain view. Upon further investigation, it was determined the victim's sister was a suspect. She eventually admitted to the burglary and an additional burglary that had not been reported yet.

Family Disturbance / Resisting and Delaying a Peace Officer July 28 at 7:00 p.m., officers responded to a family disturbance. The male subject involved did not live at the location in the 200 block of West Montana. When the officer tried to escort the suspect away, the suspect became combative, but was eventually restrained. Both officers suffered abrasions to their knees and elbows in the altercation. The suspect was arrested and taken into custody.
