Highlighted Activity - Week of June 24 - July 30, 2010

During the last seven day period, the Police Department handled 605 service events, resulting in 116 investigations. Following are the last week's highlighted issues and events:

Fight in Progress - Suspect Arrested June 25 at 12:57 p.m., a fight in progress was reported in the area of Royal Oaks and California. Officers responded, but the participants had fled the area. Officers made a broader search and located a male and female subject walking at Canyon and Maple. One of the officers recognized the male subject as a known gang member. The two subjects were detained and it was determined the male had been involved in a fight with another male subject. He claimed he did not know the name or whereabouts of the other male subject. Officers were not able to locate the second subject. The subject detained was identified and served with the Gang Injunction order.

Bear Incidents June 26 at approximately 1:50 p.m., police received two reports of bears in the area. A mother bear and two cubs entered a garage, probably looking for food, in the 00 block of Hidden Valley, and another bear was scene in the 300 block of Highland. In both incidents, the bears were convinced to move back into the hills.

Evading / Resisting Arrest - Suspect Arrested June 27 at 10:32 a.m., an officer on patrol in the area of California and Huntington saw a red Mustang speeding west on Huntington. The Mustang went through the red light at California and continued west at a high rate of speed. The officer went in pursuit of the vehicle with lights and siren. The vehicle went through two stops to Central, where the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. The vehicle continued rolling and struck two other vehicles, causing minor damage.

The suspect continued to run through yards, jumping fences and attempting to hide and evade arrest. He eventually jumped a freeway fence and ran onto the 210 Freeway, where he attempted to flag down motorists. When no one stopped, he began running west along the shoulder and then crossed the freeway northbound. He continued west to the on-ramp at Myrtle and Central, where a detective was waiting behind a wall. When the suspect was within ten feet, the detective came out, identified himself and ordered the suspect to the ground. The detective subdued the suspect and he was taken into custody without further incident.

Grand Theft Auto June 28 at 9:01 a.m., police received a report of a stolen vehicle in the 100 block of North Ivy. The vehicle had been parked and left unlocked on the street in front of a residence and there was a spare key in the console. The suspect probably found the key and took the vehicle. The vehicle is a gray, 2010 Toyota Camry.

Vehicle Burglary June 28 at 9:20 a.m., an officer was dispatched to the 1600 block of South Mountain regarding a vehicle burglary. The victim parked his vehicle in the parking lot of the business were he works and closed the windows, but is unsure if he locked the vehicle. He returned to his vehicle approximately two hours later and found the stereo had been taken and his checkbook was missing from the center console. Another radio was taken from the trunk. Investigation continuing.

Robbery / Battery on a Peace Officer - Suspect Arrested June 29 at 5:50 p.m., a robbery occurred in the 500 block of South Myrtle. The suspect entered a women's boutique, simulated a weapon, and robbed the store of money and a credit card receipt. The suspect was observed leaving the store by patrol officers and a foot pursuit ensued in the 100 block of West Lemon. The suspect was eventually taken into custody by officers in the 100 block of East Lime. The suspect was uninjured, but one of the officers suffered an injury to his hand. The suspect was positively identified by witnesses and charged with robbery and battery on a peace officer.

Commercial Burglary - Suspect Arrested June 29 at 5:45 p.m., a commercial burglary occurred in the 500 block of South Myrtle just prior to the above listed robbery. A painting was stolen from a business. The victim gave a description of the suspect, but it did not match the description of the robbery suspect's clothing in the robbery incident and a report was taken.

During the booking process of the robbery suspect, an officer noted the suspect had a car key in his possession. In the early morning hours, the officer located the suspect's vehicle parked in the 300 block of South Myrtle. In plain view in the back of the vehicle, he observed the painting stolen from the store on Myrtle. The painting was recovered and a search warrant will be obtained to check the vehicle for other clothing possibly worn in the burglary. The robbery suspect will also be charged with commercial burglary.

Petty Theft with a Prior / Possession of a Stolen Credit Card / Possession of a Controlled Substance - Suspect Arrested June 30 at about 11:00 a.m., an officer on patrol observed a subject riding a bicycle fail to stop for a stop sign. As the officer attempted to catch up to the bicyclist, the bicyclist failed to stop for a second stop sign. The officer stopped the subject, who did not have any identification in his possession, and a consent search revealed the subject was in possession of a controlled substance and a stolen credit card. He was arrested and taken into custody.
